Hypnagogic Drift, as implied by the prefix Hypno--from the Greek «hupnos» (ὕπνος) "sleep"--has an unmistakable dreamlike quality thanks to the ethereal droning and reverb which embodies much of the subgenre, a sort of extreme version of traditional Vaporwave's slowing down of music.
The earliest roots of this subgenre can be heard in Skeleton's (骨架的) self-titled album, which is composed of just over nineteen minutes of haunting ambience, although the tracks "computer," "water," and "skin glow" off their debut album "Holograms" could be said to be even earlier examples.
